Major Roads in Chennai

The most important road in Chennai is Anna Salai, also known as Mount Road, which is as old as the city itself – 400 years old. The road starts at Fort St. George and ends at Kathipara Junction in St. Thomas Mount serves as the heartline of the city. It is the second-longest arterial road in Chennai. This road traverses through Government Estate, LIC Building, Thousand Lights, Teynampet, Nandanam, Saidapet, Guindy.

Grand Southern Trunk Road (GST), also known as Chennai-Trichy Highway, starts at Kathipara Junction in St. Thomas Mount and heads towards Tiruchirappalli. The road runs through important localities such as Meenambakkam, Pallavaram, Tambaram, Vandalur, Kilambakkam, Guduvanchery, Chengalpetu, Madurantakam, Tindivanam, Villupuram, Vikravandi, and Ulundurpet.

Rajiv Gandhi IT Expressway, famously known as Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR), is a 45-km long road that serves as the employment node of the city. The road starts at Madhya Kailash, traverses through Perungudi, Thoraipakkam, Sholinganallur, Navalur, Kelambakkam, Thiruporur, and joins East Coast Road at Mahabalipuram.

East Coast Road (ECR), built along the coast of the Bay of Bengal, connects Chennai with Kanyakumari. It starts at Thiruvanmiyur and passes through Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai, Injambakkam, Panaiyur and Uthandi in Chennai city.

The longest arterial road in Chennai is Grand Western Trunk Road, which is 13.8 km in length and is also known as Poonamallee High Road. A stretch of the road within corporation limits is known as EVR Periyar Salai. This road starts at Muthuswamy Bridge near Madras Medical College, Park Town, and ends near Maduravoyal Junction traversing through Kilpauk, Aminjikarai, Anna Nagar Arch, Arumbakkam, Koyambedu.

Grand Northern Trunk Road is a 10.7 km stretch starting from Dr. MGR Chennai Central Railway Station to Madhavaram Mofussil Bus Terminus (MMBT).

Mount-Poonamallee Road is an arterial road connecting Kathipara Junction in St. Thomas Mount with the Poonamallee suburb connecting Manapakkam, Porur, Kattupakkam. This 11-km stretch is fast becoming an IT hub and could turn into OMR 2.0.

Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Road is an arterial road connecting Pallavaram on GST Road with Thoraipakkam on OMR. This stretch is also known as a 200 ft radial road. Velachery-Tambaram Main Road intersects Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam Road at Pallikaranai.

Chennai Outer Ring Road is a 62.3 km major transport corridor that connects Vandalur in GST Road with Minjur through Mudichur, Kundrathur, Nazarathpet, Pattabiram, Redhills.

Chennai Bypass Road is a 32-km six-lane fully access-controlled carriageway that interconnects Perungalathur on the GST Road to Puzhal on the Chennai-Kolkata NH-5 passing through Maduravoyal on the Chennai–Bengaluru NH-4.

Vandalur-Kelambakkam Road and Sriperumbudur-Singaperumal Koil Road through Oragadam Industrial Corridor are other important roads on the outskirt of Chennai.
